The last campaign of Boostic

Facebook fans Euro RSCG 4DThe last article of Martin Untersinger for “Rue89” (article in French) about the Parisian OOH campaign of Boostic, French company offering to « buy » followers (the website is not accessible at the moment I write this article) pushed me to write about this new trend.

Well, I call it “trend” since more and more companies are offering such services.

To summarize: they are offering the possibility to purchase fans and followers. Most of them are not clear about the way they produced such fans. But it seems obvious the methods may be aggressive or just “fake” (like creation of fake Facebook accounts).

Whatever the way they create fans, this new tendency brings few matters to the digital marketing industry.

Up to now, the value of a company online was measured partially by the number of fans and followers. And this is true that we are more likely listening to companies’ messages that have great number of fans and followers.

This inclination is pushing companies and agencies to create and get the biggest number of fans. And it is true that it looks nicer when you can show the fan page you manage with 150’000 fans instead of 1’000.

In my opinion, this kind of services will not last for long. Indeed, they exist thanks to the lack of knowledge of the customers. Indeed, the number of the fans/followers is not the only parameter that can be counted in Facebook or Twitter. In my opinion, customers should look more at the interaction level of their fans.

Undeniably, the most important for a company is to get in contact and dialog with its customers, being able to pass a message, show their new products, etc. And this is possible only at the condition that the fans and followers are really interested by the brand and have not been “captured” or “paid”.————————————————————————————————————–

Why are Google + Pages different than Facebook pages?

Google+ pagesGoogle+ used to be a platform that helps you to connect only with other people, however, earlier this week Google introduced the new business profiles that they call Google+ Pages. This made people wondering how Google+ pages will distinguish themselves from Facebook pages. Are there any difference?

Similarity

Google+ Pages looks almost like a Facebook page with a profile picture and 5 others on the top. Just below them users can find 4 tabs – publications, about us, photos and videos. The first one is activated by default and it’s the equivalent of Facebook status updates. On “about us” brands are able to give more information about the page and to leave a link to their website. The pictures, just like in Facebook, are categorized into albums.

Distinctions

1. Direct Connect from Google search

This feature allows users to easily connect with brands right from the search results in Google. All they have to do is to put “+” before the name of the page they are searching for (For example: +Angry Birds). When you click on the result you automatically go to its Google+ profile and then you have the opportunity to add it to your circles.

2. Hangouts

Hangout is a new feature that allows users to have real time video conversations between each other. This has been used by +Muppets for the past days as a way to interact with their followers.

3. SEO implications

Unlike Facebook every link shared through Google+ has search engine optimization implications. At the most basic level, when links shared through Google+ attract +1′s from a user, then that user’s friends logged into their Google accounts will see the +1 for relevant searches. This leads to 2 conclusions. First, SEO teams will want to be closely involved with the content strategy for Google+ Brand Profiles and, second, marketers will be extremely motivated to keep sharing more content through Google+.

Downfalls

1. Only 1 owner of a page

Google+ pages are allowed to have only 1 person as admin which can be a bit tricky for big companies that have large staff responsible for the social media management.

2. Posting by mistake

It is hard to get when you publish content by your page and when from your personal profile which makes social media managers a bit frustrated about using Google+.

3. No applications

There is currently no application for Google+. It contributes to the global lack of interactivity in this social media channel but hopefully this will change into the future.

Google+ really has the potential to impact brands on a global level if it gets enough popularity and active users. To do so it really needs to stand out from its biggest rival – Facebook. So far it is just another social media to share and communicate around your brand. Of course, this is also a good SEO tool that helps you to build links toward your brand and website.————————————————————————————————————–
