The Royal Wedding – join the conversation on #EuroTwedding

Today is the day of the decade. Prince William and Catherine Middleton are getting married at Westminster Abbey. The Royal Wedding as we call it looks like it’s been the most expected event from the Media (since the election of the Pope). Around 8000 journalists from all around the world have been accredited to cover what will be the most watched ceremony in history with expected audience of about 2 billion people.

But the event isn’t going to be aired only on TV. YouTube is taking advantage here as it is live-streaming the Royal Wedding on the official channel of the British monarchy. So far it has around 3.8 million views and the uploaded videos have been watched more than 12.2 million times.

Just like every buzz the Royal Wedding doesn’t come up unnoticed on Twitter as well. Euro RSCG Worldwide wanted to merge the conversation about this topic so they have created the hashtag #EuroTwedding via which each user would be able to follow the conversation about the event of the decade. Unfortunately, Tweeting during the ceremony has not been possible. Prince William and Kate Middleton have decided that they would be jamming cellphones in the church when they exchanged their vows today.

From Euro RSCG 4D Bulgaria we wish all the best to the Royal couple. And to all the women who have always wanted to marry a prince – don’t worry, William is not the only one.

Who is most popular online?

Last week at Ad Age’s Digital Conference Converse Chief Marketing Officer Geoff Cottrill said that the company is spending more than 90% of its marketing dollars on emerging media. It made us think about how important social media is becoming for businesses and that nowadays there are hardly any left that are not considering some online engagement.

Inspired by that Euro RSCG 4D Bulgaria wanted to make a research and to find out who is the most famous in the social networks these days.

The most popular page

We looked at the most popular pages on Facebook and we were quite surprised to see who’s on top. Texas Hold’em Poker has more than 40 million fans. If you think about it – what can be more addictive than an online poker game played with real people from all over the world? We should also consider the fact that the game has been developed by Zynga which has many other famous projects on Facebook like FarmVille and Mafia Wars that played a vital role in making people come back to the social network.

The most popular brand

Have you ever thought of which is the most popular brand in Facebook? It’s in fact the social network itself thanks to her page with more than 37 million fans. Facebook is also considered the most popular internet brand for 2010 followed by YouTube and eBay.

The most popular celebrity

Eminem is the most popular celebrity in Facebook and that is not a surprise because of the 2 major hit songs he has released for the last year. The first one, his duet with Rihanna, which is the 4th most viewed video on YouTube, and the second one called “Not Afraid” is also in the top 10. They both proved once again that the white rapper still knows how to be a great performer.

The most popular actor

When I saw that this is Megan Fox I was a bit shocked. Why is she so popular? I wanted to find out so I advised myself with Yahoo answers. According to the most people’s opinion neither she’s such a good actress, nor is she so beautiful. But despite of that some people describe her as a younger and fresher faced version of Angelina Jolie and many magazines (like Maxim and FHM) have considered her a sex symbol.

The most popular TV show

House, M.D. has turned out to have more than 20 million fans and this makes it the most popular TV show on Facebook. It is not a surprise since the show has been honored with 4 Emmy Awards and 23 nominations. Hugh Laurie, who plays the lead as Dr. Gregory House, has won 2 Golden Globes and has been nominated for several Emmy nominations. As of August 2010, he is the highest paid actor in drama series in the United States.

Even if by this date Facebook has more than 600 million users so far nobody has managed to engage more than 5% of them in a single page. Only the future can show how much exposure a page can have in Facebook but we all know that it’s more about the engagement with fans that is more important.

Sarah Palin will run for Bulgarian Presidency in 2012

Have you ever realized how important communication in politics is? I don’t think Sarah Palin did; or maybe she understands it too well so let’s not speak about her any further.

Two weeks ago Euro RSCG 4D Bulgaria published an analysis on the Oscars as a Digital phenomenon. And one of the subjects that were animating the conversations online was the 12 Oscar nominations of The King’s Speech. I don’t know how you feel about it but after watching the movie, it was obvious that the Weinstein brothers, once again had managed to make another major indecent crowd-pleaser. So I spent at least 2 hours trying to find negative comments about the movie. As Jack Marx puts it, it felt as if the entire film critics had been corrupted to write good reviews and the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences had been paid to nominate movies that are cinematographically poor. I even suspect opinions to have been influenced by the ongoing rave of positive reviews from the media industry and keep their criticism for themselves in fear of being isolated.

Overall although I admit the performance of most of the actors was fairly remarkable, my point is that we could have expected more than just a predictable story about friendship or marital support. Considering the weight media plays on the population nowadays, the theme of communications in politics was far too neglected; especially during the final speech of the King. Regrettably in order to touch the emotional cord of most spectators, the choice of playing music during the apex of the movie spoiled the moment. It felt a little bit too much of a popular fairy tale but here it is only a matter of opinion. As it has been spoken about in the “The value of critics”, building an opinion mainly depends on whether or not one wants to evolve the discussion from enjoying the moment, being moved by the movie or understanding the director’s choices of shots and plans. But this is not the point here.

The King’s Speech story takes place in Great Britain at the time the Nazi movement was building momentum in Germany and about to invade Europe. At this period of fear and distress for the British people, a strong leader must have been able to reinvigorate the military forces while reassuring its citizens. In his too few short appearances in the movie, King George V played by Michael Gambon did stress the importance of communication in politics: “this is a new media age”, Kings are now obliged to “invade people’s homes” as “actors,” and must win the heart of the people, whereas, before, they just had to “look good in uniform” and not “fall off their horse” in public.
So how can a stammering king act as a charismatic leader at times radio as a mass media was just getting popular? This is the main subject around the movie. But what are the new technologies our politicians need to master while we are entering the second decade of the 21st century?
A new media age for Bulgaria

Nowadays there are many tools politicians can use (less influenced by the favors of press moguls, by the way) in order to spread their message to their audience: Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other dedicated blogs. Barack Obama and Nicolas Sarkozy have all used these digital tools at their advantage during their presidential campaigns in order to get elected. Their respective websites (which are suspiciously similar) are good examples of the integration of Social media in Political communication. But how digitally aware are Politicians in Bulgaria?

Truth is they are doing quite well… In comparison, on Facebook, the French Finance Minister, has 5,073 fans; his British peer, the Chancellor of the Exchequer has only a number of 131 fans, yet he has only been appointed in May 2010. Simeon Djankov has a stellar 4,398 fans. Therefore if we compare the French and the British population to the 7 million Bulgarians or so, it is quite amazing. Minister of Foreign Affairs Nickolay Evtimov Mladenov appears to be the most popular and Twitter savvy Bulgarian politician with 1,786 followers although his account has not been certified by Twitter. Unfortunately, most if not all political parties’ websites such as the Union of Democratic Forces, or the Bulgarian Socialist Party are not yet social media oriented. For the moment visitors are not invited towards any official Facebook page, YouTube, VBox7 or Twitter profile. In the rise of the next municipal and presidential elections, as more and more individuals tend to spend an increasing amount of time online (For the recent Bulgarian National census, a total of 3,100,023 forms were filled online within nine days) it will be interesting to see which of the political parties will develop an integrated digital strategy in order to expand the conversations with the Bulgarians online.

The medium is the message

In my opinion we need to underline that, even if communication has been transformed during the last 5 years due to the technology advancements, the purpose of all media still remains the same: The medium is the message. In ancient Roman times the Forums were the usual place where most citizens socialized. Therefore it was very common for statesmen and talented public speakers such as Cicero to use Forums. It was indeed the best medium to persuade the widest audience possible.

In recent months live video streaming has positioned itself as a rising trend in online consumer behaviors. I believe now, we need to ask ourselves what will be the role of this new trend in political communications. Will politicians exploit the potential of online video streaming such as Upstream? How will Google TV and other video on demand solutions affect this trend? Personally, I bet Cicero would have jumped on this amazing opportunity to spread his wise words to the ears of remote listeners regardless of their location on the planet. In 2012, major elections are forthcoming in the USA, in Spain, in France and in Bulgaria in 2011. So tell me, in Bulgaria who do you think will be the first to deliver the next digital King’s speech? (Damned be the one who tells me it would be Sarah Palin).
