Email marketing vs. SPAM

Today I opened my inbox to read again dozens of emails from perfect strangers to me who speak as my best friends and even recommend me to buy their medicines although I feel completely healthy. They also promise me  to get back my ex. What would my husband say about that?!

Why some marketers still think that once they were good to reach my email they definitely have right to use it? I didn’t ask them, I don’t expect any email, I’m not sick, and in any case I don’t plan to get back the ex.

Does the fact that emailing is for free means that email marketing is free? Definitely not!

My time is worth money and I read all the emails in my  inbox. So, I lose time and money while doing this. Furthermore, I feel used or exploited. Why a total unknown company considers to occupy my time with its corporate problems and low sales? It’s annoying!

Regularly unasked emails from a worldwide unknown company are a spam – annoying spam which disturbs us daily.

As a digital marketer I work online – my inbox is part of the office equipment. There are all my customers, competitors, news reports which I track and which interest me. I can’t perceive any letter received in my inbox without being wished as a brand reputation tool. It’s the opposite!

Even if it looks like a brilliant idea, spam marketing is not.

Winning a new customer takes time. Any new customer is a long-term investment. Marketing research, exploring the client, its desires and needs before offering the appropriate marketing and advertising builds a special connection. This is a brand reputation. This kind of approach sells.

How nice it would be if all the companies were honest, open and clear with their customers and invest in brand communication.

Facebook pushes people to help each other

The world largest social network both for businesses and individual users, certainly not cease to surprise me. Besides all known benefits like branding, customer engagement, viral effect, client retention, etc., I had the chance to personally benefit from Facebook that saved me a lot of time and headaches.

I lost all my personal documents on the beach on Sunday; yes I know that is the problem living on the seaside. ;-)  So I was resigned to the fact I had to spend considerable time in institutions to get copies of all documents I lost. But oh, surprise! I was so glad to receive the next day a personal message on Facebook from “a stranger”  that found my wallet and asks how he could return it.

Instead of lining up in overcrowded institutions I got the documents right after half an hour. Sure, I should be happy to have found a friendly person who guesses the right way to contact me knowing only my name. ;-)   But what a nice and small example of how the social networks are becoming part of reality and our lives. The social networking profile becomes our digital business card, ID card or even our e-passport.

Julian Georgiev

Julian Georgiev or better known in the office as July is the fresh breeze of male realism in the ladies’ dominated team of Euro RSCG 4D Bulgaria. I guess the ladies’ excessive expression leads him sometimes to remain silent and shy in the eyes of everyone, but it is rather restrained and balanced and he knows when to stay silent :-) July is our Web Specialist if you’re curious what are the side effects of working in an office with many women, short deadlines and creative marketing campaigns, read his answers below:

1. We know you as a very balanced person, what is your dark side?

My dark side ? Hm ? I didn’t join the dark side. Yet…  Just joking. I suppose when I’m very impatient I get very stressed. But I’m managing to be calm and steady. From time to time…

2. What do you like most in your work?

I love to work in the CGI sphere. The challenge of accomplishing huge projects is tempting for me and I always try to be more organized which is hard for a person like me. And not to forget that here we are working with wide range of companies abroad and in Bulgaria.

3. What is your favorite subject in the office?

The coffee machine. She is my best friend. She never complains, always listens to you and she is there to help in the tough mornings.

4. What was your favorite game as a child?

I loved to play glass balls. You can win a lot if you are good at aiming.

5. When did you realize that you grew up?

Honestly I still do not realize that. Does it mean I’m still not grown? Could you excuse me for a second I need to water myself, I heard is good for growing.

6. Do you miss your childhood?

Now that I have grown, yes I miss it.

7. If you catch the gold fish, what will be your three wishes?

Plane, Yacht and Submarine … with remote control.

8.What is your greatest fear?

То forget to save after hours of work.

9. And what makes you smile?

A good joke.

10. In which mood are you today?

Excellent. Thank you for the interview. It was very exciting.————————————————————————————————————–

Teach me to dream!

When you were little, have you dreamed to become astronauts one day?

Me personally, I don’t retain any memory of such heroic aspirations. As a matter of fact, my desire to subjugate the world (read the space, too) was born years later ;-)

Anyway, we – who are supposed to be adults – are a lost cause. But are children of today dreaming of space adventures?

Judging from the “Who is more and most?” it looks like there aren’t many future astronauts among Bulgarian children. By the way, it’s unbelievable I don’t find a Facebook page of this TV show for kids, having in mind all the groups and pages out there! ;-)

Certainly future astronauts grow among American children.  And guess who cares this to happen – NASA!  How? Through online tools of course. Why otherwise would I bother you with all this…

The online initiatives for children of NASA (the National Aeronautical and Space Research) are not one or two, but here I will point out the examples that really impressed me.

For a start, let’s see the website of NASA KIDS’ Club.

Don’t let yourself to be misled, NASA does not offer any online games wasting your time. In each of these games you will find out that some cognitive goals are set, served to children via beautiful images and realistic sounds.

Sure, NASA has also thought of the adolescents that sometimes need a pure online fun. The next website is to be used by visitors not under 13 years old. Well, there is no upper age limit, so I don’t really feel guilty for the lost (not working!) time having fun on this website.

For the final, here’s another NASA website for the most curious of all ages that offers original video answers to frequently asked questions.

These are just three of all digital solutions of NASA that you can find on the web. What impressed me most about these tools is not the web design, the creative concept or the software implementation. It’s impressive that a government agency established 50 years ago shows commitment to the youngest generation. Even more – shows it in the language of this generation – Internet.

NASA encourages children of today to dream and entertain online with a mixture of educative information and pure fun. While enjoying all these websites, kids are learning about space and NASA technology. With all these online applications, the government agency is actually raising a generation of NASA enthusiasts.

Can you think of similar examples on the Bulgarian web space? I can’t but I dream of the day when this will be the case!
